MIGRATION TOUR WESTERN MONGOLIA
Tour highlight
Mongolia: The Land of the Blue Sky
With around 250 cloudless days per year, Mongolia experiences harsh winters from November to March, with temperatures averaging -25°C (-13°F) and occasionally dropping to -35°C (-31°F). In western Mongolia, Kazakh nomads embark on a remarkable spring migration, moving their herds—horses, camels, yaks, cattle, sheep, and goats—across the Altai Mountains to reach spring pastures. This 150 km journey takes five to six days, involving extreme conditions such as frozen lakes, mountain passes, and temperatures as low as -40°C.
Renowned for eagle hunting, these nomads travel with camels carrying essential supplies like frozen meat and a stove for cooking. Their diet consists mainly of meat and dairy due to limited vegetable availability. Drovers’ huts, provided by the Mongolian government, offer shelter at key points along the route. Herders rely on long-wave radios for weather updates, braving dust storms in the lower valleys and harsh cold in the highlands. Despite the risks—icy rivers, narrow mountain roads at 2,000 meters altitude, and the constant threat of wolves—families undertake this seasonal transhumance, preserving their ancient way of life.
This visually stunning migration offers a rare opportunity for filmmakers and photographers to capture the resilience and traditions of Mongolia’s nomadic culture.
