In this 7-day trip, travel to the far western corner of Mongolia where the Altai Mountains lie – a stunningly beautiful region of snow-capped peaks, torrents, glaciers and large alpine lakes. See the highest mountain in the Mongolian Altai Tavan Bogd area: Khuiten Peek; the Shiveet Khairkhan Sacred Mountain, ancient Petroglyphs, the pristine Khoton and Khurgan Lakes, and the Baga Turgin waterfall.

Experience the unique Mongolian culture: the nomadic life, eagle hunting, traditional throat singing, and horse trekking and hiking.

Day 1: Arrive in Ulgii
Arrive in Ulgii
Arrive in Ulgii City in the Bayan-Ulgii province of Western Mongolia. Your English-speaking guide and driver will welcome you at the airport and take you to breakfast, before driving to Sagsai village. Here, you will be introduced to the western Mongolian nomadic culture, meeting a Kazakh family, and learning about hunting with eagles. The day finishes with a drive to Tsengel, a small village where you'll stay the night in a shared house. (B/L/D/Shared accommodation)

Day 2: Traditional Mongolian throat singing and archery
The unique musical artform of throat singing
In Tsengel, we will meet a traditional Tuvan throat singer, followed by a session of archery with the local Tuvan people on a special archery yard. We will visit nomadic families, experiencing their way of life. (B/L/D/Shared house)

Day 3: Tavan Bogd National Park
Horse riding through Tavan Bogd National Park
Today, we drive to the Tavan Bogd (Five Peaks) National Park to see the Sacred Mountain - Shiveet Khairkhan and the petroglyphs. Our driver will drive ahead to our next destination, while we go to the base camp on horse. Our luggage will be transported by camels and handled by the friendly and helpful local people. Here we camp overnight at the base camp (elevation 3000m). (L/D/Shared house or ger)

Day 4: Horse Riding to Potanin Glacier
Seeing the Potanin and Alexander Glaciers
We horse ride to the impressive Potanin Glacier - seeing both the Potanin and Alexander glaciers. The 20km long Potanin glacier runs down from the highest mountains of Mongolia and is an excellent base for trekking and climbing the surrounding peaks. We then climb, up to Malchin Peak (elevation 4050 metres) - at the Mongolian-Russian border of Tavan Bogd. (B/L/D/Tent)

Day 5: Khoton and Hurgan Twin Lakes
Do you like fishing? The Khoton and Hurgan Twin Lakes
We ride with the horse caretaker to the border post, before jumping back into a vehicle and driving to Sirgali. Here, we see the beautiful, crystal clear, Khoton and Hurgan twin lakes, filled with plenty of fish and where many birds make home. The landscape around the lakes is picturesque, surrounded by snow-capped mountains. Please let us know if you would like to go fishing. We will then go and see ancient rock carvings of Turkic origin, 1500-2000 years old. Afterwards, we drive to Sumd-Airakh and stay overnight at a yurt. (B/L/D/Ger)

Day 6: the Altai Mountains and Sumd-Airakh river
A free day by the Sumd-Airakh River
Take in the beautiful view of the Sumd-Airakh river and Altai's snowy mountains at your leisure. Enjoy a free day riding a horse or trekking. (B/L/D/Shared House)

Day 7: Return to Ulgii
Ulgii guest house or ger
We drive back to Ulgii, and after a full day of being on the road we arrive at your apartment accommodation, where you can enjoy a good hot shower. (B/L/D/Apartment)

Return to Ulaanbaatar
We say farewell as you fly back to Ulaanbaatar.
